44-1 EXT. ONDER DE KABELBAAN. DAG

Anton kijkt naar de kabelbaan*), en hoort met enig ontzag het duidelijk uit het hoofd geleerde (toeristengids-)verhaal van Benji aan.

BENJI:

This cableway goes all the way to Swaziland . It used to carry asbestos from Swaziland to Wildebeeskop It's length is 20 kilometers. It travelled at 9.5 kilometers per hour and it is a marvel of engineering. It was also used by illegal immigrants from Swaziland , to get into South Africa . Sometimes, when the cableway broke down for a few days, many immigrants in the open carriages died from dehydration.Thousands of them.

ANTON

Thousands?

BENJI

They looked like ghost, white, covered with dust. If you picked them up, they broke into pieces. Like mummy's. And now we go to the church.

ANTON

What's special about that church?

BENJI:

It is our church.

 Johan, in politieuniform, slaat vanuit zijn politieauto Benji en Anton gade.

44-3 INT. ZWARTE KERK. DAG

Closeup van Anton. We horen de de preek.De  charismatische zwarte voorganger lijkt zich speciaal op Anton te richten. Anton weet zich opnieuw het middelunt van een groot spel, waarvan hij de regels niet precies doorgrondt.  

DOMINEE

Morality is the capacity to be moved by interests of others. We cannot always act upon what we see but we always have the freedom to see and to be moved. Our humanity demands that we recognize injustice and act against it.

Sentelina kijkt naar Anton. Anton voelt zich ongemakkelijk.

DOMINEE

Once, in this land, some people claimed that their lighter skin and European origins gave them the right to dispossess those of a darker skin. They made their fortunes, by exploiting the poor.

Anton, de enige witte man in de kerk, durft niet meer om zich heen te kijken.

DOMINEE

But also the whites paid a price: for centuries they lived in fear. Their security was based on the insecurity of others.  Whatever their colour, everybody in this country  was a victim. And that is the true and deeper meaning of what we used to say in the years of Apartheid:an injustice to one…?

ALLEN

Is an injustice to all!

Het zweet breekt Anton uit, bij het horen van de -klassieke- strijdkreet tegen Apartheid.

DOMINEE

We all have suffered,  in our lives. But if our sad histories make us blind for injustice and suffering of others, it is really only a matter of time before we ourselves become victims. To act in defense of others is to act in defense of myself.  If something lessens your worth as a human being, then it lessens mine as well. An injustice to one, anyone, is an injustice to you.  

Die laatste zin is gericht op Anton. Iedereen kijkt naar Anton. De hele zwarte gemeenschap staat als een blok achter Zine. Sentelina glimlacht naar Anton. Anton is bang van haar. Van alles.
